Residential Metal Roofing Demand Increases for Remodels

Posted on Black metal roofing panels

According to recent research commissioned by the Metal Roofing Alliance, consumer demand for sustainable roofing solutions led to a 3-point increase in market share for residential metal roofing. In 2015, metal roofing held an 11% market share, but in 2016, that figure soared above 14%, lagging only behind classic asphalt shingles. Some regions in the U.S. have even seen figures as high as 30% for metal re-roofs over the last couple of years. In order to get the true picture of consumer demand for metal roofing increasing, we can look back to 1998, when only 3.7% of residential re-roofing projects were metal roofing installations. Metal Roofing Alliance President, Dick Bus, anticipates the metal roofing market share growing to 20% by 2020, stating, “This latest surge brings us closer to hitting our goal of having metal comprise 20% of the residential roofing market by 2020.”

Homeowners had a variety of reasons for choosing metal roofs, including: it’s attractive, it’s a good investment that adds value to their homes, it is strong and has excellent protective attributes, and it lasts a long time. Standing seam metal roofing has been the most popular choices in the South Eastern United States, but in other regions, standing seam roofs were edged out by metal tile roofs in terms of popularity.

As members of the Metal Roofing Alliance, Slate & Slate Roofing is very excited to see more homeowners adopting metal roofing as an alternative to less sustainable solutions.
